medical defence shield work experience

Behind the Scenes at Medical Defence Shield – Student Edition

Avani Tambe, a third-year English student with ambitions to pursue a career in law, recounts her experience during her placement at MDS.

I was excited to join the legal team at Medical Defence Shield (MDS) for a three-day insight experience. Coming from a non-law background, this work experience was an invaluable opportunity to gain exposure to the legal sector and better understand the type of work a legal team does. From the outset, I was encouraged to take a hands-on approach. I adapted quickly and immersed myself in the workings of the organisation.

Day 1: Diving into Legal Research

  • I worked with Solicitor Gaurav Bangia and Case Manager Sarah Hussain.
  • Researched witness summons procedures for an advice letter to a client.
  • Read case matters including a witness statement and complaints collection.
  • Researched Employment Tribunal claims process, and GDC/GMC/NMC fitness to practice procedures.
  • Drafted an advice letter to a client using research on GDC investigations.

Day 2: Developing Drafts and Templates

I worked with Trainee Solicitor Demi-Leigh Mason, Legal Assistant James Unger, Senior Case Manager Chloe Smith, and Head of Membership Giorgio de Faveri.

  • Updated the GDC investigation processes advice letter template using my previously conducted research.
  • Proofread and edited a letter of claim.
  • Drafted a PCC advice letter. Read case matter including Case Examiner decision sheets/ bundle and GDC fitness to practice rules.
  • Supported the team with admin tasks.

Day 3: Client Communication and Case Study Writing

I worked with Trainee Solicitor Jade Conway and Legal Assistant Jade Nicolson.

  • Researched the process of reapplying for training after NTN removal, in relation to a specific case.
  • Drafted an email to the client outlining the re-application process and providing support.

The highlight of my work experience was drafting a one-page case study for a fascinating closed case relating to drug testing. Once finalised, this will be published on the MDS website to help potential clients understand the type of work MDS does!

Beyond the Legal Work

One of the unexpected joys of my time at MDS was getting to practice my Spanish with Office Administrator Lidia Bardell, who kindly showed me around and introduced me to the team. I also had the opportunity to speak with legal professionals about their career journeys, and received valuable advice on navigating the legal world as a non-law student.

A Heartfelt Thank You…

I am incredibly grateful to everyone at MDS who supported me during this placement. Special thanks to:

  • Jo Ketley, HR and Business Support Officer, for coordinating my work experience
  • Deputy Heads of Legal, Amardeep Nibber and Banita Khosla
  • Head of Legal, Sarah Dodds

Thank you all for such a welcoming, informative, and engaging insight into the legal profession.
