Dr Joydeep Grover MBBS, MRCEM, FRCEM

One of the highlights of my career was being appointed as Medical Director of MDS in 2015. This role has allowed me to contribute to the professional support and development of doctors across the UK, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive in an ever-changing healthcare landscape. Being part of an organisation recognized as one of the key bodies providing professional services to the medical community has been both a privilege and a responsibility I take seriously.

I qualified from the Armed Forces Medical College in India in 1995 and began my career in Intensive Care, Acute Medicine, pre-hospital Emergency Medicine, and Air Ambulance services. In 2003, I moved to England to further develop my expertise and completed Higher Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine, gaining entry to the GMC Specialist Register. I now work as a Consultant at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, the largest hospital in the region, serving 2.3 million people as a Level 1 Trauma, Stroke, and Vascular Centre.

My clinical interests include managing major trauma, acute stroke, and procedural sedation in the Emergency Department. I also have a strong focus on Clinical Governance, Risk, and Quality, which led to my role as Medical Director for Quality and Safety at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Teaching and mentoring are central to my work. I served as Programme Director for FY2 doctors at North Bristol NHS Trust for five years and am a full instructor for Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) and the European Trauma Course (ETC). I am also a senior instructor for the EMERGO system for major incident planning.

Nationally, I contribute to healthcare policy as a member of the General Medical Council’s BME Forum and have provided expert opinions on key cases, including the Supreme Court appeal for Dr Bawa-Garba and the national COVID inquiry.

I am also the National Vice President (Operations) and Trustee of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) Foundation, the largest representative body of Indian-origin doctors in the UK.

As a founding member of the World Academic Council of Emergency Medicine (WACEM), I have co-authored extensively on global Emergency Medicine, including widely cited work on the COVID-19 pandemic. My expertise has been sought at numerous international panels and media discussions.

My career remains dedicated to improving healthcare quality, supporting my peers, and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals. Outside of my professional life, I enjoy photography, playing cricket, and cooking, which provide a creative outlet and a chance to relax with family and friends.
