Dr Nanda Kumar MBBS, Diploma In Anaesthesia (DA) and MD in Anaesthesia, University of Madras, India, DA (UK), FFARCSI (Dublin), FRCA (ad eundem) London, LLM (Medical Law and Ethics).

I am proud to serve as a Specialist Medicolegal Adviser with MDS. I first joined the organisation at its inception in 2014 as the sole Medicolegal Adviser. After a brief hiatus, I returned to this post in 2016 and have been committed to supporting medical professionals ever since.

My medical journey began in India, where I completed my MBBS, a Diploma in Anaesthesiology, and a master’s degree in Anaesthesiology. After moving to the UK in 1990, I obtained my FCAI from Dublin in 1992 and completed my registrar training in the UK. I then pursued higher specialist training in the USA, including a Fellowship in Cardiac Anaesthesia.

Upon returning to the UK, I took on a role as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, now part of The Calderdale & Huddersfield Foundation Trust. Although I retired prematurely due to ill health, I later recovered and worked with Care UK in Ilford before retiring from clinical practice and rejoining MDS. To further enhance my medicolegal expertise, I completed an LLM in Medical Law and Ethics at De Montfort University in Leicester.

During my career, I have held various leadership and academic roles, including College Tutor, Director of ICU, and Equipment Officer. I have also examined for the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Glasgow and England. I served on the College Council in Ireland until stepping down during the pandemic. Most recently, I became an ICBSE Assessor for the Intercollegiate MRCS examinations in the UK and Ireland.

For me, MDS is an essential support system for medical professionals facing challenging circumstances. Throughout my career, I have offered guidance to colleagues informally, and now I am proud to provide this support in a formal capacity as part of MDS’s dedicated team.

Outside of work, I enjoy sports and music. As both a vocalist and instrumentalist, I find great joy in my musical pursuits. Living in a village near Glenfield in Leicester, I stay active in these passions, which bring balance and fulfilment to my life.
